Goodtype is excited to present Intro to Hand Lettering with Ken Barber! A foundational course for those looking to develop their lettering.
Saturday, July 29th from 10am - 5pm
The Haymarket Building, 135 W 29th St., New York, NY
Hand-lettering is a unique art form, offering a distinctive means of visual expression not possible with calligraphy or typography. Among lettering's advantages is its potential not simply to communicate content, but to become the content itself.
This workshop will introduce the principles of hand-lettering, in addition to exploring historical approaches and various production techniques. Participants will refer to familiar typographic models and helpful specimens as they create their own hand-drawn wordmarks. A comprehensive slide presentation and drawing demonstration will provide further guidance as students acquire a practical foundation for implementing one-of-a-kind lettering in various design contexts.
Ken Barber is a type designer and letterer at House Industries, where he has been making drool worthy type and lettering for longer that he’d like us to admit. He is a true "OG" of the lettering world and the sought after teacher of many of our favorite lettering artists. He has lectured at several universities and conferences around the world and we’re honored to be able to partner with him.
Workshop will be limited to 20 students.
The workshop location details will be e-mailed with reservation confirmation.
