Execution of “troublesome” letters
How to build the functional elements of a single word
Identifying common mistakes
Adding weight and ornamentation
How to creatively mix lettering styles
How to effectively fill negative spaces for even distribution and balance
How to build lettering layouts
Ending with a 20 minute creative freelancing Q&A session
Class will be limited to 20 participants. All supplies will be provided.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Tara Johnston is a freelance hand lettering artist, muralist, and designer born and raised in Texas and currently living in Austin. She is known for her bright color palettes, playful letterforms, and fearlessness to “go there” with her work.
After graduating from the University of North Texas with a Bachelors degree in Fine Arts in 2010, Tara landed a job as an in-house lettering artist with a premier wedding company in Austin. She designed an entire line of custom hand-lettered wedding decor that included statement cake toppers, table numbers, large scale banners, and table signs.
In 2017, Tara decided to launch her own lettering, illustration, and design business and now focuses on creating custom lettering works for local businesses. When she’s not painting walls or drawing letters on her iPad, she’s usually on the hunt for two things: live music and a great old fashioned cocktail.
